The Latin word lacertus was used for both “muscle” and “lizard,” probably because a muscle’s movement under the skin looked rather like a twitchy lizard to Roman eyes (or a mouse, depending on who you ask). And similar to the origins of “alcohol,” the word “alligator” is Arabic for “the lizard,” and connects closely to the term “ligament.”
