This common kitchen companion known to us as nutmeg got its name from the Anglo-Norman nois mugue, or “musky nut,” so called for its uniquely strong aroma. The word “musk” itself derives from the Sanskrit muska, which means literally “little mouse” (though more poetically refers to a man’s reproductive organs).
