The word “opium” comes from the Greek “opion,” and literally means “little juice.” Ops in Greek can mean both “face” and “opening,” so this juice that comes from poppies (opos) is likely named so because of its potentially mind-expanding qualities. Or it could refer to the mouth, the “opening of the face,” where one would logically put the juice (opos).
