“Panic” is an ancient Greek term referring to the fear caused by an unforeseen meeting with the god Pan. They believed that he would lie in wait in hidden places, then suddenly appear to frighten lonely souls. Since he is commonly depicted as a representative of the natural world, some have suggested these “panic attacks” might come from humanity’s guilty conscience over grave offenses committed against that planet.
