Renegade
Etymologically, a “renegade” is “one who denies.” Similar to the previously mentioned “devil,” the word was often applied to antagonists or wishers of ill-will, those who sought to “deny” a person’s will or intention. It comes to English through Spanish renegado and ultimately Latin renegare, to “deny” (negare) “again” (re-).
