At the heart of sarcasm is the idea of the “rending of flesh.” This comes to us from the Greek sarx, meaning “flesh,” and kazein, meaning “tear,” all of which comes together to suggest that a “sarcastic” remark is one that is intended to “cut” or wound the recipient.
