The word “torch” comes from the Latin verb torquere, which means “to twist.” Thus, a torch is something that is twisted, which refers to the way in which torches used to be made – by twisting pieces of straw together, then dipping them in a flammable substance. A “torque” wrench follows a similar logic, in that it “twists” to tighten or loosen.
