Weirdly enough, “exercise” etymologically doesn’t have anything to do with strict rules or dieting, but actually means “unleashed.” It comes from a Latin compound, ex meaning “out of,” and arcere meaning “restrained, enclosed, contained.” That second part is related to the word “ark,” but in another fun twist, it’s thought that “exercise” was originally employed in the context of releasing oxen and other farm animals from their pens so they could be yoked and used to drive plows. Talk about a rough workout!
