Gargoyle

Try saying the word “gargoyle.” Feel how that “rg” sound hits in the back of the throat? Well, that’s basically the idea behind the etymology of the hideous stone statues, who got their name via the Old French word gargouille which in fact means “throat.” The statues on the roofs of churches often hid spouts in their mouths to funnel off water, so to observers below, it would appear the ghoulish guardians were literally “gargling” whenever it rained.
