Not all habits are necessarily bad, as any nun will tell you. The word comes from the Latin habitus which means “to have,” or “behave,” as in “behavior.” A habit, then, can either refer to a person’s inner state, or to a observable extension of that state, whether it’s a regular routine (like smoking) or a commonly worn set of clothing (like the sisters’ kooky hats).
