Idol
From the golden to the American, idols have a long history of driving folks crazy. The term comes from Greek eidos, and means “form or shape,” as in the specific, physical realization of a generic, conceptual “idea.” We also get the word “idyll,” which means “picture-like,” from this same source, despite the alternative spelling.
