Outside the Scandinavian Territory
Starting with the 9th century, Norsemen were sent as emissaries to Byzantium and they ended up working as mercenaries for the Empire. They even made it to the Imperial Guard, and were called the Varangian Guard. One such Varangian Guard was called Harald Hardrada. He made it back home and became the King of Norway.
