Torture
A cruel tactic to get the accused to confess was torture. One account of a confession involved Tituba, a Barbadian slave. As Tituba was being beaten, she reportedly cried out “The devil came to me and bid me serve him.” Tituba was one of the initial women accused of sorcery and her confession would have given her a more lenient sentence. She was not executed but sentence to jail. It is uncertain what happened to Tituba after the trials had ended.
