Ergot Poisoning
A rational theory about what may have caused the hysteria during the Salem witch trials is that many in the village suffered from ergot poisoning. Ergot is a fungus that affects rye grain in warm, damp springs and summers; a common condition in Salem. The symptoms of the poisoning include spasms, fits, hallucinations, delusions and vomiting.
