Instead of always executing those accused of bewitching, the local government introduced a law that took the homes and lands of the people on trial. This would send the accused and their family into extreme poverty as many of the accused were land owners and relied on farming as their livelihood. The trials had a direct effect on the accused’s entire family, as family members of a witch were also considered to be demonic too.
