Drinking During the Ceremony, Japan

During a Japanese ceremony a couple might drink – you guessed it – sake. The tradition is known as san san kudo. There are special san san kudo serving sets from which to serve the sake. The sets have three cups, one symbolizing heaven, one symbolizing earth, and one symbolizing humankind. The bride and groom each take three sips from each, for a total of nine, since nine is a lucky number.
