“I’ve studied children in crowded apartments and low-income housing a lot,” said Susan Saegert, professor of environmental psychology, “and they can end up becoming withdrawn, and have trouble studying and concentrating.” She worried that willingly signing up for similarly designed living spaces would result in such inadvertent psychological scarring.
