War bonds were awfully popular gift ideas during both World Wars, as they not only acted as a last minute stocking stuffer for the laziest of gift givers, but also because they helped fund the military. By the ‘80s, kids just got regular ol’ government bonds as gifts, with the promise that they’d be worth so much more in 20-30 years.
