While his twin brother, Brian, was raised as a boy, at 17 months old Bruce Reimer was now known as Brenda. In July 1967, the first step in his transition was castration. Dr. Money was adamant that in order for the sex change to be successful, neither Brenda nor her twin brother should ever find out she had been born a girl.
