A Tasmanian Tiger family at the Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart

A Tasmanian tiger was also called the thylacine or the Tasmanian wolf. However, the animal was neither wolf nor tiger. Tasmanian tigers lived in new Guinea, Tasmania, and Australia. They were shy predators who unfortunately had gone extinct in the 20th century. The thylacine hunted during the night in pairs or singly and preferred birds, kangaroos, and small rodents. Hunting, illnesses, and habitat loss were the reason for their elimination.
