The first and last Queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani faced political challenges that would eventually wipe out the Hawaiian monarchy. She refused to comply with an existing constitution that gave much of the monarch’s power to American legislators. The Queen focused on giving power back to the monarch but was overthrown in 1893 when she surrendered in order to avoid bloodshed.
