In 1988, Bhutto was elected the first female Prime Minister of Pakistan and a Muslim nation. She gained personal popularity and eradicated existing cultural beliefs on power play in gender. Her government was under scrutiny though as she was considered a corrupt politician, and in 2007 was assassinated by a suicide bomber after an election rally in which she was campaigning.
