Dorothy Lawrence
Lawrence was a British World War I journalist who forged identity papers as Private Denis Smith in order to document first hand reports of the war from the front line. Her gender was revealed in hospital when she became ill in the line of duty. She was arrested and eventually sent home under strict orders not to publish details of her experience in the war but published them anyway a year after the war ended.
