Hua Mulan
You may know her from Disney, but Mulan is celebrated in Chinese folklore as a female warrior who dressed as a man to take her father’s place in the army. “The Ballad of Mulan” tells the tale of a young woman who fought for 12 years unidentified and gained high merit, but turned down any reward or recognition. The story of Mulan is acknowledged as a legend rather than historical fact.
