Margaret Anne Bulkley
According to studies of her life, it is believed that Bulkley took on the role of a man in order to work in medicine – something she could not do in the 19th century if she remained a woman. She identified as Dr. James Barry, an Irish surgeon for the British Army and was known for improving the condition of wounded soldiers and having a gentle bedside manner.
