Chevalier d’Éon was a French diplomat who was born female and lived the first 49 years as a man working as a spy, and then 33 years identifying as a woman. d’Éon, who was known to possess androgynous characteristics was raised as a boy because her father could only inherit money from his in-laws if he had a son however, at the age of 49 d’Éon began to identify as female.
