Clayton was an American woman who allegedly fought in the Civil War under the name Frances Clalin. Although a number of photographic evidence exists of her in women’s clothing and military uniform as well as several newspaper stories, little facts are known of her service in the army. After the war, Clayton told reporters that the truth about her being a woman was never unveiled.
