Newton

While we can’t blame them for trying, Apple has also released its share of experimental products that didn’t take off. One of those was the Newton, an early attempt at a tablet computer released in 1993. Handwriting recognition was supposed to be the Newton’s most attractive feature, but it proved to be mistake-prone and was mocked by both “The Simpsons” and the “Doonesbury” comic strip. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1998 he ended production of the Newton almost immediately, in part due to his noted aversion to the stylus.
