Boy Meets Boy should have been a watershed moment in LGBTQ television representation. It should have been, as this Advocate cover implies, the first gay Bachelor. Instead, thanks to an ill-begotten twist — many of the contestants are actually straight! — it was a crass, exploitative, regressive program. The show’s focus, James Getzlaff, said he “felt betrayed.”
