Patrick watched as the man whipped out his wallet and fiddled with a roll of $100 notes. He figured that the man was wealthy and probably had loads more $100 stored somewhere. Just as he was about to focus on checking in his own items, he saw the man push the $100 notes deeper into the wallet, instead, grabbing a card that looked all too familiar to Patrick: it was an EBT card. EBT cards, also called Electronic Benefits cards, are given by state welfare departments. They are electric systems that enable users to purchase food items.
