‘Surprise, We Made You Sympathize With A Monster’ Gets Old Fast
The first time “Black Mirror” really uses this trick, in the Season 2 episode “White Bear,” it works. But by the time it happens in “White Christmas”AND “Shut Up And Dance” AND “Hated In The Nation” AND “Crocodile” AND “Black Museum,” it’s like, OK, we get it, humanity exists in a moral gray area. But if this is the only (emotionally manipulative) story this show is gonna tell, why the hell am I still watching?
