Just How Diverse Is The Marvel Cinematic Universe Really?

As the MCU progresses, it’s inspiring to see diversity in performers increase, especially in later works like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther. It’s a stark contrast to early films like The Incredible Hulk or Captain America: The First Avenger. However, there is still much work to be done as far as centering superhero films around people of color — thus far, Black Panther and the Guardians Of The Galaxy are the only films in which the title characters are played by performers of color. The MCU also needs to portray more women of color in interesting ways — again, Black Panther is a wonderful start, but we need more. Asian characters are routinely dealt with problematically, especially in Doctor Strange and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. Additionally, the events of Infinity War are somewhat disappointing in their attempts to “reset” to the original Avengers by the end to set up for part 2. In this case, this also means the whitest performers stay alive.

Behind the camera, it can not be stated clearly enough: there needs to be more main creative crew members of color. Plain and simple.
