At this point, neither of the brothers had a source of income, so the city shut off their utilities. In 1939, the Con Edison gas company forced their way into the house, in an attempt to remove the two gas meters. The house had already become filled with items that City Marshal James Larkin had to resort to drastic measures to get inside the building.
