Each Jar Guarded a Particular Organ
The lids of the canopic jars represented the four sons of the sky god, Horus, who would each protect a particular organ. The jars consisted of the head of a baboon which guarded the lungs, the head of a jackal which watched over the stomach, the head of a falcon which protected the intestines and the head of a human which guarded the liver.
