Melody was well aware that U.S labor laws weren’t on her side, either. Even though the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act allows for 12 weeks of unpaid annual leave for a new mom, what would she do after the 12 weeks were up? Would she be one of the many new mothers who were forced to return to work right after her baby was born? She didn’t see another way around it.
