Clothing styles are dictated by social status in North Korea. According to Lafforgue, the elite add color to their palette and “glimpse a few styles by watching TV or by observing the foreigners.” The working class remain observing the country’s practice of “Juche”, or self-reliance, wearing traditional, often haggard outfits.
