15. That Amazing February Morning
It was on February 5, 1869 when Deason started digging in a new location. He dug close to some tree roots when his pick broke. The Dunolly Museum website has some great stories about the discovery, including some news reports:
“Damn it! I wish it [was] a nugget,” shouted Deason.
