12. 70 Pounds of Quartz!
The two miners had one issue with this huge nugget: it was embedded in 70 pounds of quartz and the two had to place the gold nugget on fire to separate it from the quartz. Deason wrote in his 1905 account that this process left “a great deal of loose gold,” but they managed to get a main chunk. You won’t believe how huge it was!
