Iran Flight 655
On July 3rd 1988, a US warship in the Persian Gulf shot down a civilian aircraft headed for Dubai. According to the official investigation, Navy personnel misidentified the aircraft as an Iranian fighter jet and claimed it had deviated off-course, but later reports revealed that information to be false.
