In the 1960s, the CIA launched a project that involved implanting a microphone into a cat’s ear canal and a radio transmitter into the base of its skull in order to record information from the Kremlin and other Soviet embassies. After $20 million, the first Acoustic Kitty was hit and killed by a taxi on the way to its target. The project was abandoned shortly thereafter.
