Turns Out Those Easter Island Heads Have Entire Bodies Hidden Underground

The moai were toppled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Maybe due to earthquake. Or rival tribes knocking them down in the cover of night. Or even the result of European colonization that began with a 1722 Dutch explorer and got infinitely worse with the start of the slave trade in 1862. But by the end of the 19th century, all of the statues had fallen.
