Deep Sea Photography (1899)
Louis Marie Auguste Boutan was a diver, biologist, and the first person to accomplish an underwater selfie. The placard in his hand says “photographie sous marine” which means “underwater photography” in French. Even though this wasn’t the first underwater photograph taken— and it wasn’t, the innovation used to capture this photograph was groundbreaking for the photography community.
