Chaiten, Chile
Sometimes ghost towns are even more haunting when they were inhabited quite recently. In 2008, a volcano erupted pretty damn close to the Chilean town of Chaiten. Volcanic ash in the Blanco River caused a pyroclastic mudflow that flooded and absolutely decimated the town. At least it wasn’t a modern-day Vesuvius.
