Hashima Island, Japan

<p>This small island, just off the coast of Nagasaki, once housed the 5,000 miners and families who worked in Hashima’s underwater coal mines. But the mine closed in 1974, and the city was never demolished or repurposed. So I suppose it just sits there – empty, whistling, drenched with salt – waiting to be the inspiration for a Wes Anderson movie.</p>
