The Stories Behind the Most Iconic Photos of the 1970s

Nixon Meets Elvis (1970)

National Archives

The story behind Nixon meeting Elvis on Dec. 21, 1970 is interesting to say the least. The King of Rock and Roll was trying to get approved for a badge from the federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, which, some claim, he thought would give him permission to stroll through airports carrying as many guns and as much drugs as he wanted. After he was denied the narc badge by the bureau itself, Elvis went over their heads straight to the top, making for a bizarre but now legendary photo op.
