Margaret Thatcher Takes Power (1979)

In many ways, this photo of Margaret Thatcher symbolizes the end of the ’70s. Thatcher’s right-wing Conservative Party took power on May 4, 1979, and set about dismantling much of Britain’s homegrown industries, social programs and business regulations, focusing the country’s economy on banking rather than the production of goods. Similar actions were taken by Ronald Reagan across the Pond.
