The ’63 Mets went 51-111, and that was still a significant improvement over their inaugural season a year prior. So desperate for offensive talent were the Mets that they turned to an 18-year-old Ed Kranepool (pictured) for 294 plate appearances. They had the lowest batting average in the majors and the highest ERA in the NL.
